DARBY PICKED FOR WINGATUI SPRINT

Cornflake and Darby "will probably be at cramped odds for the Dunedin Jockey Club and Flying Handicaps, the off course double on the second day of the Dunedin Cup meeting at Wingatui today. Darby did not race on the first day of the meeting, but won at Gore, his home track, at his last start. Cornflake ran against the sprinters on Dunedin Cup day, and finished in the ruck; but his return to middle-distance racing should show him in much more favourable light. In his last race, he was ridden by a little-experienced apprentice. Today, his rider is R. J. Skelton. Shoal, Desert Cloud and Royal Halyard will be strong Canterbury representatives in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. They were first, second, and fourth in the Dunedin Cup. Desert Cloud has since been placed in the Peninsula. Handicap at Motukarara. A peak performance by Mighty Dollar would give him a second-to-none chance in the James Hazlett Gold Cup, a race he won two seasons ago. Hopes for a Canterbury success will rest solely on Watch and Wait, whose best form as a miler has been of a high standard. Riding engagements Include:— B. J. The Te Aroha three-year-old filly Marie Brizard has not yet raced badly, and she - looks well placed for another good prize in the £lOOO Ohinemuri Cup on the first day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Paeroa tomorrow At her last start, Marie Brizard won over a mile, and the Ohinemuri Cup, of a mile and a quarter, will be her first attempt at a longer distance. Barobar, the top-weight and early favourite for the Electric Handicap, may not run. If she is scratched. Stylish Officer, Gay Sailor, and Arran Chief will come strongly into favour. Stylish Officer has the best of the barrier positions, and that may tip the scales in his favour. The weather has been clear during the week, and it seems likely that the going will be fast.
