Cricket NORTH CANTERBURY WINS

Suburban Beaten At Rangiora In an interesting finish, North Canterbury beat Suburban by three wickets in the final match for the Junior Cup played at Dudley Park, Rangiora, yesterday. The North Canterbury side batted on after passing Suburban’s score, and lost a further wicket before play stopped at 130 for eight wickets. ' Continuing its overnight score of 272 for eight wickets yesterday morning, North Canterbury’s remaining two batsmen were dismissed for the addition of only five runs, leaving North Canterbury a first innings lead of 33. C. Reid added -another three runs to his overnight score before he was bowled by A. Joy .for 80. Joy finished with the best bowling figures, having taken seven wickets for 69 runs. Reid then played an important part in Suburban’s second innings, for it was his steady bowling that was mainly responsible for Suburban’s moderate 156. Of the 120 balls Reid bowled, the batsmen were able to score off only 29. and he finished with the good figures of four wickets for 43.

A. Thompson and P. Hooper were the best of the Suburban batsmen. Thompson batted solidly to score 30 runs, and later in the innings R. Hooper again batted well to be undefeated with 39. North Canterbury began its second innings shakily, but a third wicket stand by G. Wood and Reid put new life into the innings. Wood batted steadily for his 45 runs, and Reid contributed a forceful- 31. When their partnership was dissolved, the Suburban bowlers broke through and four wickets fell with the addition of only 11 runs North Canterbury had lost seven wickets for 113. 11 runs short of victory. E. Bailey and M. Wood then came together and scored the required runs. At the close of the match. Bailey was not out for 17. J. Bain was the most successful Suburban bowler, and he took three wickets for 23 runs. Scores were:— North Canterbury 277 and 130 for eight wickets (G. .Wood 45, C. Reid 31, E. Bailey 17 not out, R. Capstick 11; J. Bain three for 23. R. Eyre two for 54, A. Joy one for 38, D. Steven one for eight, J. Tucker one for two) beat Suburban 244 and 156 (R. Hooper 39 not out, A. Thompson 30. D. Stapley 23. P. Corboy 20, D. Tanner 11. R. Eyre 10; C. Reid four for 43, R. Pulley three for 26, E. Gardner two for 38, G. Wood one for 24).

lege in a two-day inter-school cricket match at Timaru.

Batting first, Timaru scored 265, and St. Andrew’s replied with 96 and 92. Good batting by J. C. t Lindsay (62). J. A. Metcalf (52), and L. Simpson (41) placed Timaru in a winning position. The St. Andrew’s batting was weak against a well-varied attack. For Timaru. M. Mareko took six for 32 in the first innings, and Simpson four for six in the second innings.
