DRAFT PLANS FOR GYMNASIUM

Boys’ High School Project Draft plans for the proposed gymnasium at the Christchurch Boys’ High School were described to the school’s board of Governors by the headmaster (Mr J. Leggat) yesterday. The proposed building of brick and glass; is to be 108 ft long and 46ft wide. The main entrance at the north end will be surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows and one of the long walls will be mostly heavy-weight glass. The lower sections would be strengthened by wire. “We weigh up the risk of breakages with the lightness 'of the building,” said Mr Leggat. The architect had assured him that the windows would withstand being struck by footballs. There is provision for a platforiq at one end. The walls will be 16ft high and the roof will rise to 23ft. The plans will bq referred to the Education Department.
