SOUTHERN RHODESIA
Government Not Formed (Rec 7 p.m.) SALISBURY (Rhodesia), Feb. 14. Sir Edgar Whitehead, the newlyelected leader of the Southern Rhodesia division of the United Federal Party announced to-night he had been unable to form a Government. He told a press conference: "I regret to have to inform you that after two and a half days of intensive negotiations with Southern Rhodesian Ministers and former Ministers in an endeavour to reach unity in the party the talks reached a deadlock this evening.” Sir Edgar Whitehead was elected to the leadership at a party congress on February 8. which removed from leadership the Prime Minister, Mr R. S. Garfield Todd.
Sir Edgar Whitehead was serving as a Federal representative in Washington before he was recalled to take over the party leadership. His succession to the Premiership was taken to be automatic.
On his return from Washington on Wednesday he said there was “enormous doubt” whether he would take office as Prime Minister. His most urgent task was to restore unity in the governing party after the split which deposed Mr Todd, he added.
