Elliot Runs Fourth Four-Minute Mile

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

PERTH. February 16. The Australian mile champion, Herb Elliot, last night ran his third four-minute mile in 20 days and broke the world grass track record previously held by M. Halberg, of New Zealand.

Elliot ran the distance in 3min 59.1 *sec. Halberg’s time was 4min 1.4

Merv. Lincoln, of Victoria, recorded the same time and judges had difficulty in separating the two. Lincoln made a desperate effort to snatch victory over the last 50 yards. Elliot took the lead just before the half-mile. Lincoln chased him in the last 220 yards and regained some ground. With 50 yards to go he was on level- terms. He took a narrow lead, but Elliot crept up and just reached the line first.
