New Type Of Jumping Shoe Used

The built-up jumping shoe, which helped the Russian Juri Stepanov to capture the world high jump record from Americans, and which has been the cause of a controversy in athletic circles, has now made its way into New Zealand competiiton. Harbott, the Marist club allrounder, used one to gain second place to Peter Wells in the Canterbury high jump title on Saturday. Conditions were not ideal for a competitive try-out however, for the take-off was soft and greasy, and the best Harbott did was sft lOin. in a try-out during the week Harbott twice cleared six feet with ease, and he now intends to have the sole built up further to give increased leverage. Harbott was second to Wells at the national title last year.
