University Retains Senior Title
Continuing its first day’s lead. University retained the senior club championship with 47 points. This year saw the emergence of Olympic as one of the major clubs in the senior division and with 33 points it displaced 'Technical from second place by two points. Credit for Olympic’s improved showing is attributable to Brian Curie and Ron Stevens in the long distance races, for between them they scored 29 points, 20 of them coming from firsts by Curie in the marathon, six miles, three miles, and steeplechase. Last year’s winner, Toe H, finished well down in the junior section which was dominated by High Schools, which was nearly 40 points clear of Technical. Technical had equally convicing wins in the women’s senior and under 16 sections. Westonian won the junior under 17 grade.
The final points were:— Men.—Senior: University 47, Olympic 33, Technical 31, Toe H 20, Ashburton 18, High Schools 16, Westonian 12, Marist 8, South Canterbury 8, Canterbury 5, Polytechnic 2, New Brighton 1, Rangiora 1, Waimate 1. Junior: High Schools 61, Technical 22, University 19, Ashburton 15, Marist 13, Toe H 12, Waimate 11, Christ’s College 7, South Canterbury 3, Polytechnic 3, Greymouth 1. Under 17: Wetsonian 34, High Schools 28, Marist 9, Ashburton 7, Christ’s College 6, Greymouth 3, Polytechnic 2. Women.—Senior: Technical 71, Toe H 17, University 11, High Schools 4, Polytechnic 4. Under 16: Technical 31, Polytechnic 8, Toe H 7, Rangiora 6, Marist 1.
