ATHLETICS Miss Chamberlain Runs 440yds In 56.6sec

Four new Canterbury records, one of them a New Zealand record, were made in an entertaining final day of the Canterbury athletic titles at Rugby Park on Saturday. The former world record holder, Marise Chamberlain (Technical) lowered her own New Zealand and Canterbury record when she ran the women’s 440 yards race in 56.65ec and was only three-tenths of a second outside the current world record. Miss Chamberlain’s former record was 56.95ec.

I The performance concluded a most successful sequence of events for Miss Chamberlain as it was her fifth title for the second year in succession. It was somewhat of a surprise, however, for because the 440 yards is not on the Empire Games programme, Miss Chamberlain has been concentrating her training ;on the shorter events to improve I her chances of selection.

Favoured by drawing the lane inside her strongest rival, Fay McBeath (Toe H), the 880 yards record holder, Miss Chamberlain, had made up the apparent deficit resulting from the staggered start, after about 100 yards. The two went down the back stride for stride. Rounding the last bend Miss Chamberlain drew away and raced to the finish 11 yards clear.

Earlier in the afternoon. Miss Chamberlain had a three-yard win in the 100 yards in 11.4 sec and last week she won the 75 yards, 220 yards and 80 metres hurdles Miss Mcßeath’s times of 57.95ec ■ for the 440 yards and ll.Osec for third in the 100 yards were personal bests. In addition to her five individual titles, Miss Chamjberlain was a member of the winIning relay team that was only l.lsec outside the Canterbury record of 50.4 sec.

Recent half-mile races have been full of interest with G. F. Hack (Technical) and J. D. Macdonald (University) sharing wins. Saturday was Hack’s turn in no unmistakable fashion and in winning the title in Imin 53.35ec he broke by .ssec V P. Boot’s record, which, along with some others made in 1937, was the oldest on the books. Boot set his record in the year New Zealand at the Berlin Olympic Games and in the next year he won the Empire Games title in Imln 51.2 sec which remained the record till the last Games. The race demonstrated the steady advance that is being made by Canterbury athletes in general, for the' first six to finish all did better than the winner’s time last year. Macdonald was unfortunate to draw the outside and his sprint to get round the field at the start must have cost valuable yards later in the race. Macdonald led round the first lap in 55.55ec. Hack made his bid with 250 yards to go and maintaining his stride well finished strongly 10 yards ahead of Macdonald, who equalled his previous best time of Imin 55.1 sec.

Following up his excellent mile record of the previous week, D. Dixey (Toe H) gained his second record at the championships by reducing his own junior two miles time by Bsec and narrowly missing the New Zealand record of 9min 17.8 sec, when he ran the distance in 9min 19.2 sec. Although the track had been slowed by rain in the preceding 24 hours. Dixey was unfortunate in having another heavy shower- falL just before the —*two miles. Probably the main reason for Dixey missing the national record, however, lay in the tactics of his opponents who ran an excessively fast fist lap. The lap times to the nearest second were 63, 69, 73, 74, 69 72, 73, 66.

The fourth record was a welldeserved solo effort by the University quartet, G. Wade, I. Hamilton, J. D. Macdonald and B. Kerr, whose time of 3min 25.25ec in the four by 440 yards relay took nearly tour seconds off the record made by Technical in 1953. It was a good run at the end of a day in which they had all competed in other events.

Rain Affects Throwers After the many records that have come from the throwing events during the season it was an anticlimax that none should be made in them at championships, but on Saturday this was not the fault of the competitors. Although the officials did their best to dry the concrete tiff-owing areas by mopping them out and putting sand on them they were unable to get the purchase necessary for record performances. Under\the circumstances Miss Valerie Sloper had reason to be pleased with her distance of 51ft in the women’s shot put. I Jim Borlase did well in the senior hammer throw to achieve the second best performance of his career with 150 ft 3in. He took the discus title with 140 ft 3in and on the first day 'he was second to Robin Ball in the J shot put. Brian Curie (Olympic) established himself as the most versatile distance runner in the province, winning four titles ranging from the 3000 metre steeplechase to the 26 miles 385 yard marathon, which he won three weeks ago A week ago he won the six mile title. On Saturday morning he won the three miles and in the afternoon the steeplechase.

Curie’s time in the three miles, officially given as 14min 54.65ec, could have been faster, but once having made his winning break he did not force the pace. Probably he was remembering the tiring steeplechase to come in the afternoon, with its 28 hurdle jumps and seven water jumps It was rather a disappointment for R. J. Stevens that, after being second to Curie in the three earlier races, his lack of jumping ability cost him his chance of taking a place in the steeplechase.

Nine Events A feat that will take some rivalling was that of the 15-year-old Miss Leslie Anderson (Technical), who during the two days competed in nine events, winning four and taking second in four. In the ninth she was a member of the winning relay. But for an injury to her foot she may have done even better on Saturday while on the previous Saturday, after winning the under 16 high jump at five feet, her efforts in the senior women’s high jump were affected by a severe knock to her knee in the 80 metres hurdles. In the under 16 section Miss Anderson won the 75 yards, 80 metre hurdles; high jump, long jump, and was second in the discus and was narrowly beaten for the title in the 100 yards by the 14-year-old, K. Mackenzie (Toe H). In the senior events she was second in the high jump after clearing the same height as the winner, and second in the long jump, both events being won by Miss Sloper. The senior hurdling was again the best for many years with both the 120 and 440 yards being run in close to record time. Third in the national title last year, Cates, who equalled the 220 yards hurdles record on the first day, ran his fastest time for the 440 yards hurdles, missing the Canterbury record of 55.25ec made by A. T. Anderson in 1937 by ssec. G. Young had his turn in i the 120 yards hurdles when he won I comfortably from Cates in 15.7 sec, again a personal best time. Abbreviations used are: (A.)
