Import Controls
Sir, —On reading through the numerous letters for and against import controls, I have failed to see one that gives credit to the vital outcome of the previous controls. Had the Labour Government not brought in these controls before the last war, I am afraid we should have gone very much shorter than we did. As it was, many overseas firms brought their businesses here and started manufacturing in this country, employing mostly local labour, thereby helping solve the unemployment problem and giving us goods on the spot. Mr Watts was up in the air over the present business and accused Mr Nash of creating a fuss about nothing. A day later, we had a leading English newspaper stating it wasn’t the least surprised and had expected Some form of 'control to be imposed at least 12 months ago. We have yet to hear Mr Watts reply to that one.—Yours, etc., D. M. FRASER. January 21, 1958.
