STATE HOUSES AT LYTTELTON
Government To Be Approached
Claims for more State houses in the Lyttelton district were made at a meeting of the' Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. It will request the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr N. E. Kirk) to acquaint the Government with the “urgent need for more State houses.’’
The Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs) said that no State houses had been built for many years and he considered that the Government should be approached with a request that more houses be provided for rental or for purchase. Diamond Harbour would be most suitable for the houses and Cass Bay could also be considered. Workers’ State houses at Diamond Harbour would, be a boon to Lyttelton. Mr Kirk had promised to give all the assistance possible. When the council approached the Government a few years ago, with a request for more houses, the reply had been received that there were only 18 applicants for State houses in Lyttelton, said Cr. A. M. Miller. He moved that the council write to Mr Kirk asking him to approach the Government. People would not apply unless they knew that State houses would be made available, said Cr. G. E. Hay. Once the houses were started, the Department would be swamped with applications. The motion was carried.
