AUCKLAND AND OTAGO

Special Match May Be Arranged (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 20. New Zealand’s top two Plunket Shield cricket teams, Auckland and Otago, may meet in a special match at Eden Park next month. The Auckland association’s management committee hopes to arrange for a three-day match in midFebruary, sandwiched between the New Zealand trials in Wellington and Christchurch. The chairman (Mr A. J. Posties) put the proposal to the Otago chairman (Mr A. Ibbotson) by telephone at the week-end. Mr Ibbotson s reaction appeared to be favourable, but he said the suggestion would have to go before his committee. Mr Postles said today that his association took the initiative because it realised that the public was disappointed that the first-class cricket programme in Auckland had ended so early. “The match would compensate to some extent for Auckland missing out on an English tour trial match,” he said. Mr Postles said that the match depended on whether Otago’s fullstrength team would be available for the trip.
