ENTRY PERMIT FOR BABY

“No Possibility” Of Deportation

<h«w Zralann HrM, naaucianon, WELLINGTON. January 9. Anne-Marie Van Oorde. a IT-month-old girl admitted to New Zealand on an entry permit that will expire in a fortnight, will not be deported. The Minister of Immigration (Mr F. Hackett) said today that there was no possibility of this happening. Anne-Marie is the daughter of a Gisborne woman, Mrs D. Van Oorde, wife of a Dutch planter in Java. The baby, who was born in Java, returned to New Zealand with her mother two weeks ago after the ' upheaval over Dutch interests in Indonesia. Mrs Van Oorde said that when she and her daughter arrived at Whenuapai the immigration authorities delayed them for two hours while they quibbled over whether the girl could be ’ admitted to the country. She added that she was now wondering whether, when the child’s entry permit expired, she would be deported. Mr Hackett said today that the Customs Department, which acted as agent for the Immigration Department at Auckland, had followed the normal procedure in this case.

“Where a person arrives in New Zealand without proper documentation, a temporary permit is issued pending investigations. Mrs Van Oorde would certainly have been advised before the expiry of the permit that her child could remain in New Zealand permanently. “I find it difficult to believe that Mrs Van Oorde was held up at Whenuapai for two hours while the necessary formalities were completed,” said the Minister. “I am investigating this aspect of the case.’’
