BRITISH FRIGATE AT LYTTELTON
Four Days’ Training For Sea Cadets
A Sea Cadet officer, Lieutenant L. A. Carr, and 18 Sea Cadets from Christchurch, will join the Royal Navy frigate, H.M.S. Cardigan Bay, at Lyttelton this morning for four days* sea training.
The Cardigan Bay arrived at Lyttelton at 9 a.m. yesterday and will leave tomorrow with the Sea Cadets for Akaroa. The frigate is commanded by the senior officer of the Third Frigate Squadron, Captain G. O. Roberts, and it is visiting New Zealand to help with the sea training of naval reservists.
Yesterday morning . Captain Roberts called on the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr F. G. Briggs) and the chairipan of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr W. P. t Glue). He was accompanied by the Resident Naval Officer in Christchurch, Lieutenant-Commander J. Washbourn. The ship is an anti-submarine frigate of the Bay class and carries a complement of 10 officers and 150 men. Her present ship’s company arrived in Singapore at; Christmas, 1956, and commissioned the ship on January 10, 1957. As the present Cardigan Bay is the first ship of the name, there is only one name on the battle honours board “Korea 19501953.”
The Cardigan Bay will return to Lyttelton next Monday to disambark the Sea Cadets before sailing to Auckland.
