Obituary MR J. G. O’BRIEN
AUCKLAND, January 9. Mr John Gerald O’Brien, a noted All Black full-back and a member of the New Zealand Army team which toured South Africa in 1919, died at his home at Kiwitahi, Morrinsville, yesterday, aged 68. An AU Black in 1914, Mr O’Brien served overseas with the Ist N.Z.E.F. and was a sergeant in the Divisional Signals Company when chosen “for the Army team. In 1920, on his discharge from the Army, he again won an AU Black jersey. He was a member of the Marist Rugby team in Auckland for several years, at a time when the club had several other AU Blacks in the team.
Born in Wellington, Mr O’Brien oined the Post and Telegraph Department at Waverley on leaving school, and served at Napier and then at Auckland before going overseas with the Army in 1916. Mr‘O’Brien resigned from the department in 1928, and had. been farming ever since. He was unmarried.
