VANDALS WRECK RAIL COACH

Seats Slashed And Fittings Broken "The Press’ 1 Special Service DUNEDIN, January 9. Vandals wrought havoc in a 37-seater railway carriage standing at the south end of the Dunedin Railway Station yard recently. Every seat in the car was slashed, the padding was pulled out, and in some instances the whole leather back of each seat was removed. The lugggge racks and sponge rubber rests were cut to pieces, handles were wrenched off the doors, and broken beer bottles and glasses were left scattered about inside the carriage. A railways officer described the destruction as the worst type of vandalism he had seen during his career with the service.

Two days after the carriage had been inspected it was wanted, for train service, and it was then the damage was discovered. The damage occurred at a time when extra carriages were wanted for race traffic.
