CHRISTCHURCH MAYORALTY
Three Labour Men Available
Three well-known public figures are reported to be available for Labour Party nomination to contest the Christchurch Mayoralty when Mr R. M. Macfarlane resigns to become Speaker of the House of Representatives.
They are Mr G. Manning, the deputy-Mayor; Mr L. G. White, unsuccessful Labour candidate for the Fendalton seat in the last General Election; and Mr L Christie, a City Councillor and unsuccessful candidate for Hurunui at the election. Crs. J. Mathison and M. B. Howard, who have both been given posts in the Labour Ministry, are expected to resign their places in the council soon. Should Mr Manning or Mr Christie be selected as a Mayoral candidate there will be three council vacancies to be filled at an election concurrent with the Mayoral election later in the year.
