98th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED
Mr J. Wheatley Of Waimate
(From Our Own Reporter) WAIMATE, January t. Mr John Wheatley thoroughly enjoyed his 98th birthday party today. It was a family party, though on a smaller scale than a party a little while ago when all members of the family were present.
Mr Wheatley lives at Waimate with a daughter, Mrs E. F. Wilson, and the neatly kept garden and trim hedges surrounding the house testify to his excellent health; “I had to trim the hedges before Christmas,” Mr Wheatley said. There are many yards of hedges but Mr Wheatley took the job quietly, resting a while and enjoying a pipe and then taking up the clippers again.
He suffers from deafness and his memory is not quite as good as it used to be, but age has not affected his cheerful disposition. Mr Wheatley’s other three daughters and his son live in Christchurch. They are Mrs C. Hunter, Misses I. and C. Wheatley, and Mr M. J. Wheatley. There are 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
