66 INCREASED SACRIFICES”
Nixon’s Warning To U.S. (Rec. 10.3 a p.m.) FLORIDA, December 29. The United States Vice-Presi-dent (Mr Nixon) said yesterday that he could “see no reason to approach the New Year with fear.” At the same time he told the people of the United States they must expect Increased sacrifices. “We must remember that as much as we like lower taxes and higher living standards it won’t make any difference it we are not here to enjoy them,” he said. Mr Nixon, who is holidaying in Miami, said a tax cut was unlikely. “It would be unwise when , it is most important to maintain adequate military defences," he said. “We cannot be thinking of reducing our income when we have our allies and problems in the defence field. “The United States must maintain basic striking power. Whether-it is in the missile or long-range bomber force that will be left to our military experts. “Until we have missile ' capability to do what the Strategic Air Command can do now we have to build and maintain the Strategic Air Command. We must continue to put the maximum effort into both,” Mr Nixon said.
