The United State* Department of Agriculture laid today that more than 400 m buihel* of grain and similar amount* of other commodities' would have been added to the nation'* agricultural svrpluse* during 1057 if farmer* ad planted land held out of pro- ' Jetton’ in the soil bank. JAn official estimated that If all I lie commodities bad been produced and had gone into the government's price support programme the cpst to the Governfhent would have been about |ooom dollar*. 1 Total payment* to be mad* to ormers for taking part in the i>il bank programme are' expected to run to about 614 m doles. Under the programme, the doirtment makes payment* to j.jrmers who underplant Federal •ilotments-of wheat, cotton, corn, ce and tobacco. _The purpose of the programme | to help hold down production I ’■ surplus crop*.
