U.S. SUPPLY SHIP RETURNS

—the United State* Nhvy supply —ip Greenville Victory arrived the anchorage at tcrttalton on iturday afternoon from the Antctic and berthed yesterday ornlng. ■The vessel’s only cargo from Be south was a damaged heli*h>ter which will probably bo repaired locally. The helicopter crashed when transporting personnel from the ship to Little America. No-one wa* injured. The Greenville Victory will remain at Lyttelton for a few flay* to load store* for the Antarctic, including some for the New Zealand Expedition. The ship, on her recent trip south, left Lyttelton in company with the icebreaker Glacier, on November 33. Th* ships met with good weather and the supply ship following th* Glacier through th* ice was able to moor alongside the ice where th* store* were landed, to be hauled by tractor* and sledge* to the base at Little America. Some of the cargo was lifted by helicopter. The Greenville Victory then went to McMurdo Sound where similar favourable condition* for unloading were found. Captain K. T. Mortensen, who Is in command of the Greenville Victory, said the ice was very light this summer and he was able to bring his ship out without the aid of an icebreaker.
