Supreme Court Ten Offences Committed By Man While On Bail

A young man who committed 10 shop-breaking offences while remanded on bail on two other charges was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment by Mr Justice Adams in the Supreme Court yesterday. He was Trevor James Garlick, aged 21. Last Thursday Garlick was sentenced to imprisonment for five years on a charge of breaking and I entering and theft from Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., and with assault with intent to resist arrest. The sentence imposed yesterday will run concurrently with the five-year term. His Honour said that Garlick should never have been released on bail on the other more serious charges and that this had possibly contributed to the later offences, as he had been unable to obtain work. I term of imprisonment in addition to the five years already imposed would have a serious effect on : him. i “On September 30 you were before the lower court on a very serious charge arising out of a burglary at Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd., on August 8.” his Honour said to Garlick. “On October 22 you were committed for trial in this Court on that charge. The present offences were all committed between those two dates while you were on bail and even after you had been committed for trial.” Garlick had stolen money and property and had caused damage costing nearly £lOO, although some of the money and goods had been recovered, his Honour continued Some of the damage had been done quite wantonly. On each of the 10 charges Garlick was sentenced to concurrent terms of 12 months' imprisonment.
