WOMEN’S CLUB’S ANNIVERSARY

200 Members Attend Party Nearly 200 members took part in the forty-fourth birthday celebrations of the Canterbury Women’s Club last evening. About 110 attended a dinner party at the clubrooms and nearly 80 more members came later for the evening programme. They were welcomed by the president (Mrs W. D. Bunt) who wore a gown of black and white flocked nylon over pink taffeta and a pink spray, which had been presented to her by members. Guests of honour included the Mayoress of Christchurch (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane) and Mrs F. A. Bates (Wanganui). a former member of the club. Miss A. M. Black, an early member of the club, made a birthday cake for the occasion and cut it at supper time. During the evening Mrs Bunt announced that Miss May Redpath, representing the literary circle, had won the club’s queen carnival contest, with Mrs Jean Bennett (bridge circles) second. The Mayoress will “crown the queen’’ at a special ceremony on November 7. This ceremony will be repeated on November 8 to allow all members to see it. The birthday entertainment programme was presented by the following:— Mrs T. H. Carr (soprano solos), Mrs J. Mason (pianoforte solos), Mrs N. Sherris (contralto solos), Mesdames E. Witty, T. Berryman. W. J. Lester, L. G. Ireland. C. E. Wren and J. Scrimshaw (humorous sketches). Mesdames H. L. Wilson and Clarice Shaw were the accompanists.
