Better Prospects For N.Z. Casein Overseas

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON. October 21. The production of casein in New Zealand is likely to be encouraged by the report that Canadian production has dropped 44 per cent, in the first eight months of the year, according to trade circles here. •

The fall in Canadian production is due to Government support for skim milk powder prices in Canada. Canada is normally a net exporter of casein. In recent years her production has been about 3000 tons and she has exported about 1000 tons annually. This development opens up the possibility of additional New Zealand casein sales in Canada and also, perhaps, in markets previously supplied by Canada. The New Zealand dairy delegation to the London trade talks in November, Mr A. Linton, chairman of the Dairy Board, Mr R. Candy, chairman of the Dairy Products Marketing Commission, and Mr P. B. Marshall, general manager of the commission, are at present in America. One of the main objects of their visit is to discuss the United States market possibilities for New Zealand casein in view of the American decision to abolish

for three years the £22 a ton import duty on foreign casein. It is expected that the representatives will also follow up the possibilities now apparent due to the drop in Canadian production.
