Australians Begin Tour Well

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) KITWE (Northern Rhodesia),

October 20. A century from Jim Burke was the highlight of a good start for the Australian cricket team in the opening match of their South African tour against Northern Rhodesia yesterday. Australia declared at 302 for six and Northern Rhodesia had scored 16 without loss at stumps. After early dismissals of Favell and Mackay, Burke dominated the batting. He batted for three and a half hours for his 102 runs, which included nine fours, and he threw his wicket away from sheer weariness after he and Burge had put on 73 in 80 minutes for the fourth wicket. Burge made 81, Craig 34, and Favell 24. Simpson was not out at 44.
