Pacer Swabbed At Orari
Routine swabbing was introduced for the first time in a pacing event at a galloping fixture at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday.
J. D. Litten. the trainer-driver of Conquistador, winner of the Geraldine Handicap, drew a black marble from the container In the birdcage after the race and Conquistador was swabbed. Wimpy, the winner of the other event for pacers, the Winchester Handicap, was not swabbed. His owner-trainer-driver. R. H Negus, drew a white marble. Dignus. another member of Litten’s team, war the first horse to be swabbed when routine swabbing for pacers and trotters first came into force. That was at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting in September, 1956.
