CURRENT NOTES

Members, husbands and friends attended the September meeting of the Ham Garden Club held in the St Ninian’s Church halL Mr Watling showed coloured slides of many of the winning gardens in the recent Horticultural and Beautifying Societies’ competition. These were followed by slides of homes, gardens and horticultural specimens. The hostesses were Mesdames Hean, Entwhistle, Chambers and Kemp. The president (Mrs Sweeney) welcomed the guests and Mr Watling was thanked by Mis Wylde.

Mrs G. W. Fairweather, president of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women, was a guest at the September meeting of the asociates’ group of the council. Mrs N. Neale spoke of her life in Burma. She illustrated her talk with some examples of carving and silverware and put on native costume

The Home Economics Association celebrated its 38th birthday this week when a luncheon, attended by about 80 members, was held to mark the occasion Mrs Cooper proposed the toast to the association. Miss E. D. Killner presided. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Miss E. Gilmour, who was a life member of the association. The usual meeting followed the luncheon, and the singing circle, under the direction of Mr Peach, gave items. Miss Beryl Batstone gave two humorous recitations and was the accompanist. Mrs McDowell presided .at the monthly meeting of the Woolston League of Mothers in the absence of Mrs L. Reid. A bring and buy to raise funds for'-the provincial council was well patronised., Mrs R. Ayling gave a piano solo. Mrs W. S. Mac Gibbon showed films of her travels in Scotland at the September meeting of the Papanui-Merivale Plunket Mothers' Club. Mesdames Bromley and Brown were winners of competitions for the evening.

At a recent meeting of the Selwyn House Parents’ National Education Union Association, Dr. Roger Duff, director of the Canterbury museum, gave an addres» entitled “Impressions of New China.” He illustrated his talk with coloured slides.

At the annual concert of the Christchurch North Townswomen’s Guild, members and friends were entertained by a concert party arranged by Mr R. Lake. Mrs Linda Haase sang several solos, Mr N. Havoro gave items on the banjo and Messrs R. Lake and E Rogers some comedy duets and Mrs Ray entertained with elocution. The accompanist was Mr H. Hoyle. The guild singing circle sang two part songs, accompanied by Mrs J. P. Stubberfield, and the drama group gave a one act play entitled: “The Widow of Herdingas.” Mrs Keith Beaumont won the trophy for the most outstanding exhibit in the decorative section at the Lyttelton Horticultural Society’s spring flower show this week. Mrs E. L. Harveys trophies for the children’s section were won by Gillian Dean and Barbara Luxton.
