ZONING FOR INDUSTRY

Review Proposed By Council

Industrial zoning in Christchurch will be reviewed by the town planning committee of the City Council. The committee recently reviewed commercial zoning. The chairman of the committee (Cr. W. P. Glue) told the council last evening that the committee would be considering industrial zoning at a meeting on Thursday. “There is no hurry,” he said of a request by the Sydenham Residents’ Association that standing orders should be suspended last evening to allow a deputation from the association to give its views on zoning in Sydenham. The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) said that if a decision on Sydenham was proposed last evening, he would favour the deputation’s being heard. He agreed that committees should receive and hear deputations, but questioned whether the council should receive such a deputation, said Cr. W. J. Cowles. “It is vital for every councillor to know what is in the minds of the Sydenham and all other people,” said Cr. H. E. Fenton. He was not a member of the town planning committee, but wanted to know the people’s views. General Review The committee should have been more generous and arranged the meeting on a Monday night when Labour members could attend, said Cr. M, B. Howard, M.P. She proposed that the matter be held over and that a deputation from the Sydenham residents he received at the next council meeting.

Cr. H. P. Snjith said that if the' job of the town planning committee was going to be channelled into whatever Mondays were available, the council would still be talking about industrial zoning in 12 months. The meeting on Thursday was not dealing specifically with Sydenham— it was beginning a review of the whole industrial zoping in Christchurch.

Nothing had been decided about altering the zoning in Sydenham, said Cr. Glue. Certain problems in Sydenham had been inspected yesterday morning; but that was so that councillors could form their own opinions. The matter would go back to the. committee and be reported back to the council.

The council agreed that it would receive a deputation from the Sydenham association at the next council meeting if Sydenham zoning was coming up for consideration.
