ROAD METAL SHORTAGE
Council Works Delayed A shortage of road metal has been delaying some of the City Council’s road works, the works committee reported to the council last evening. Quinns and Shirley roads and Bickerton street were among the works affected. There had been poor deliveries from the Halswell quarries, the committee said. Road-making material could probably be bought from members of the local metal supply association, but the price would be double the cost the department was paying for its own material. In Quinns and Shirley roads, the committee reported, the placing of metal on the footpaths had been completed and penetration of the metal with tar would be carried out as soon as conditions were suitable. Because of the shortage of metal, it would be some time before the carriageway could be completed to the new channels.
Of Bickerton street work, the committee said that work on the footpaths was still being held up by the underground wiring to be installed.
