PLANT FOR ROAD MATERIAL
Investigation Of Costs
Siting of the City Council’s tar-heating and asphalt-mixing plant will be considered by the council when the lay-out of the central yard is redesigned. The works committee said last evening that to compare the cost of producing the council’s requirements of metal and bituminous products, which now entailed the setting-up of a new plant, against buying them in the open market, tenders were being invited for prices of the materials, Labour members of the council objected to the tenders being called, on the ground that there had been insufficient investigation of capital and operating costs of a modern plant to be bought by the council.
Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman, of the committee, said that at the same time as the tenders were being sought, the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) would be preparing a report on the council’s own plant. The council accepted a tender of £6240 by Andrews and Beaven, Ltd., for a new jaw crusher at the Halswell quarries.
