Tanker Sinks After Fire

LONDON, Aug. 21 The 25,000-ton tanker, World Splendour, damaged by fire yesterday 35 miles east of Gibraltar, sank early today. According to reports reaching Lloyd’s shipping agency, all the survivors, including the captain, were picked up.

The master had remained on board with a skeleton crew when the vessel was taken in tow by the British naval tug, Confident. Thirty-two of the tanker’s crew were landed last night at Gibraltar. Lloyd’s reported that the World Splendour began to sink this morning and at 7 a.m. the tug slipped its tow and stood by to pick up survivors. Fifty-five minutes later, the tug reported that all survivors had been taken on board. At that time only the afterpart of the ship was showing.
