DEATH ON THE FOOTPLATE
Fireman Saves Train (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 pun.) LONDON, August 21. An express train roared towards London yesterday with the driver dead on the footplate, but prompt action by a 19-year-old fireman averted disaster, according to the “Daily Herald.’’ The newspaper said the driver. Bill Hurley.aged 58, collapsed as the Taunton-Paddington express passed through the village bf Burnham at 60 miles an hour. For seconds after the driver collapsed, clutching his heart, the fireman, Ronald Giles, tried to revive him, the newspaper said. This failed, so Giles turned to the controls. Gently he slackened the speed of the train of 10 coaches, watching signals and controls anxiously for two miles. The train was halted alongside the platform at Slough. Giles stepped down to be congratulated by officials. Not one pasenger knew of the footplate drama, the newspaper said.
