Rowing OARSMEN FROM SYDNEY
Entrants In N.Z. Championship (New Zeaiana Press Association) WANGANUI. August 4 Thirty Haberfield (Sydney) oarsmen are to compete in the New Zealand championship rowing regatta on the Wanganui river from February 26 to March 1 of next year. The visit of the Haberfield Club to New Zealand was first mooted in 1955. But next year’s trip is the direct outcome of a talk between Haberfield’s Kevyn Webb and New Zealand rowing four cox Colin Johnstone, of Wanganui, at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
The secretary of the Wanganui Rowing Association (Mr J. Brock) has received a letter from Mr Webb which stated that 30 Haberfield oarsmen, seven former oarsmen, and 13 women, including the wives of seven of the members, will arrive in Auckland on February 19. The Australians will visit Hamilton, Rotorua, and Wellington before going to Wanganui on February 23. The visitors hope to compet.e in the Wellington regatta which is expected to be held on the Saturday before the championships. The Australians will stay in Wanganui until March 3. Mr Webb estimates that the trip will cost Haberfield between £7OOO and £lO,OOO. Wanganui clubs have signified their willingness to make boats available to the visitors at the championships. Haberfield will contest the maiden eights, fours, pairs, singles and doubles, the novice fours, the junior eights, fours, pairs and singles, the youths fours, the championship pairs, singles and doubles and the consolation senior fours. The club will not have a senior eight and it is unlikely it will have a crew in the charppion fours event
