NEW AUCKLAND CATHEDRAL
Call For Tenders Soon (N&w Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 28. Working drawings for the new Auckland Cathedral are to be prepared immediately, and it is hoped to call tenders for the first half of the building within a few months. This was announced by the Cathedral architect, Mr C. R. Towle, on his arrival from Sydney in the Monowai yesterday. Mr Towle said the first half of the building would take about four years to complete. He intended to give the work personal supervision, and to this end he had closed down his architectural practice in Sydney. The cathedral is to be built of reinforced concrete faced with handmade brick. The cost has been estimated at about £240,000. Mr Towle described the design as ‘semi-modern.” The foundation stone will be laid on June 13.
