CRICKET UNIVERSITY MATCH

Canterbury Beats Otago "The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, April 15. Canterbury University College had the advantage for most of the day when it beat Otago University by five wickets on the first innings in the first cricket game of the tournament at the university oval in Dunedin yesterday. The game, which was to have been of two days, became a dne-day fixture after rain washed out any possibility of beginning on Wednesday. Scoring on the sodden pitch was slow for most of the day, but J). L. Gallop and R. J. West increased the pace considerably in the closing stages of the game, when quick runs were needed to clinch the first innings lead. Canterbury passed Otago’s total with five wickets down only five minutes before stumps were to be drawn. ♦Few of the Otago batsmen were confident against the accurate spin attack of W. Park and T. Timpson. Gallop and G. Alabaster, the leglater took over the role of stock bowlers, but were not as accurate as the former pair. Timpson, a left-hander, was the most impressive on the day. His well-flighted deliveries often had the batsmen groping, and he deserved his three cheap wickets. Canterbury batted confidently, if slowly, although R. Hunter, G. Leggatt, and G. Alabaster produced the occasional fine attacking stroke. It was not until Gallop joined West, however, that the batting was lively. As in Otago’s innings, it was the slow left-hander who impressed and took the wickets. R. Simons attacked the stumps all afternoon, and was well assisted by the former Canterbury pace bowler, J. Kent. Scores:— OTAGO First Innings M. Aim, b Timpson .. * 15 G. Kitson, c Jury, b Young .. 15 G. Buist, c and b Park .. 4 J. Harris, c Leggatt, b Gallop .. 12 D. Harding, c West, b Gallop .. 7 M.
