GROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING

Schools’ Event Planned The Christchurch post-primary schools will conduct their own interschool harrier championships this year. This was reported to the executive of the Canterbury Cross-coun-try Running Management Committee by the secretary, Mr N. G. Hattaway. He said he had received this information from the Christchurch Secondary Schools Sportsmasters’ Association. The meeting decided to disband the sub-committee which had organised a Canterbury secondary schools’ championship for the last two years. So that closer liaison may be made with the post-primary schools, an opportunity will be given to them to appoint a delegate to the management committee. The Anglican Ladies’ Harrier Club, the first women’s club to affiliate with the committee, asked if the centre would provide a provincial title race for women harriers, said Mr C. R. Ogle. This was agreed to, and the race will be run in conjunction with'the other Canterbury cross-country titles on June 22. The Christchurch Ladies* Pioneer Harrier Club asked in a letter for details of advantages in becoming affiliated to the committee. The club had 15 competitive members, the letter said. Although the Lovelock Commemoration Relay at Dunedin on May 11 clashed with the annual Kennett Cup Steeplechase events at Riccarton Racecourse, the University Crosscountry Club was given permission to compete in Dunedin on that date. The University club is the defending champion and record holder for the Lovelock Relay. Advice from the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association confirmed July 6 as the dqte of the national harrier championships at Feilding. The events will be held early because of the visit to Australia by a New Zealand harrier team later this season. Mr H. O. Savage was nominated for consideration as a national selector.
