ROCKET BASES IN EAST GERMANY

Berlin Newspaper’s Report (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. 9.20 p.m.) BERLIN, April, IT. The West Berlin evening newspaper “Der Abend’’ said today that Soviet forces had built a chain of rocket bases across East Germany which were capable of firing atomic missiles into Western Europe. “Der Abend,” quoting its own correspondent, said the bases stretched from Czechoslovakia to the Baltic, and were manned only by Soviet troops. The missiles were a development of the wartime V2 rockets, but could be fitted with atomic warheads. The newspaper claimed that ramps had been set up at Kolberg pointing in the direction of Denmark, South Sweden, and the West German Ruhr industrial area. Others in Thuringia and -East Pomerania were aimed at Italy. Bases had also been set up at Libau, Memel, Windau, and Reval, and others had been built in cordoned-off areas of Czechoslovakia, “Der Abend” said.
