Bus Boycott Offer Fails
(Roc. 11 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG. March 2. Buses on routes boycotted by Africans were withdrawn today after the breakdown last night of attempts to end the eight-week-old dispute. All was quiet this morning in the various African townships affected as long streams of workers began the nine-mile walk to their employment in Johannesburg. The boycott began in protest over an increase in fares from 4d to sd. The Africans were offered Id rebate on the fare to be paid by their employers. Their answer was to publicly burn the offer at a meeting attended by 5000 at Alexandra township, near Johannesburg.
