Train Goes On Driverless (N.Z Press Association—Covyrtaht) (Rec. 8 p.m.) BELFAST, March 2. Three masked Irish Republican Army men, armed with sten guns, took over a goods train near Londonderry early today and sent it steaming driverless towards the city, where it crashed into the concrete buffers of a terminal goods shed. No-one was hurt. The ■ 27-waggon train was travelling at 25 miles an hour when it crashed.
It was held up by the masked gunmen 12 miles from Londonderry. The raiders used detonators to bring the train to a halt, and ordered the crew out. Then they set the train in motion.
When the 90-ton engine ploughed through the concrete buffers, eight of the waggons were telescoped and one was flung through the station roof. An official of the Great Northern Railway estimated the damage at £20.000.
