MAINLAND OF CHINA

Chiang’s Plans For Invasion (Rec. 10 p.m.) TAIPEH, March 2. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek said today that his Chinese Nationalist military forces were at the peak now for an invasion of the Communist Chinese mainland. “All American aid I put to one use—to liberate our people on the mainland,” the generalissimo told a group of visiting United States correspondents. He replied “Yes” when asked whether his military forces and weapons, air power and landing craft would be able to launch an invasion of the heavily garrisoned China coast. “It is a question of time,” he said. “If our return is delayed it will hinder morale—we are at the peak now.” Asked whether he feared an invasion might touch off World War 111, he said: “There is no danger of Russia intervening. Russia is a long way away.” The Nationalist leader claimed possession of facts and documents that, he said showed the Soviet Union was waiting for a later date to start a world-wide conflict. “The American people must believe in us,” he said. “You can take it from me that all we want is moral and material support. We don’t want troops.”
