SHIP’S BAKER FINED William Benson, a baker In the overseas ship Tasmania Star, was charged before Messrs W. T. Lester and R. H. Duff, Justices of the Peace, at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday with stealing a loaf of bread, two pork chops and a quantity of cooked meat, valued at four shillings, the property of the Blue Star Shipping Line. He pleaded not guilty and was convicted and fined £l. Constable Boyd said he had accosted Benson at 10.55 p.m. on Tuesday. He found the bread and meat on Benson. Frederick George Harris, chief steward of the Tasmania Star, said Harris had no authority to take the food off the ship. Benson had a good character on board.
