Seaman Convicted At Wanganui

(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, Jan. 16. John Frederick Ratledge, a seaman, aged 22, was sent to prison for twelve months when he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, to assaulting George Quinn at Mangaweka on December 12, so as to cause bodily harm. Mr S. S. Preston, S.M., was told Quinn had been seriously wounded with a knife.

“The use of knives in New Zealand has developed over the last five years, mainly because of seamen and ‘new’ Nev/ Zealanders,” said the Magistrate. ‘‘They have got to learn that the use of knives will not be countenanced here. They are not in the New Zealand way of life.
