ARMY EXERCISE IN AUSTRALIA
OPERATIONS IN TROPIC AREAS N.Z. OFFICERS TO ATTEND (New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON. December 25. The Vice-Chief of the General Staff (Brigadier R. C. Queree) and the Commander, Royal Artillery and Central Staff Officer (1) in the New Zealand Division, Colonel G. P. Cade, will attend an Australian Army exercise at Queenscliffe from January 9 to January 13. Announcing this yesterday, the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald) said the aim of the exercise was to study defensive operations in a tropical terrain and the employment of atomic missiles—both subjects of particular interest to New Zealand in view of her commitments in Southeast Asia.
All senior Australian commanders and staff officers and a few senior officers of the Far East Land Forces would attend.
“I believe considerable value will derive from the attendance of these two officers,” said the Minister. “The value will come not only from the content of the exercise itself, but in establishing contact with senior Australian and British officers, hearing their opinions on tactical doctrines for the Far Eastern theatre, and in putting forward a New Zealand point of view.”
Following the exercise. Brigadier Queree will spend three days visiting Australian Army schools, the Officer Cadet School, Portsea, and units and formations of the militia during incamp training.
