®ec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. Dec. 23. Salvage operations in the Suez Canal will begin immediately now that Port Said has been evacuated. Cairo Radio said last night that agreement on this was reached early yesterday between the Eevptian Govemrrent and the United Nations. Italian and Danish salvage vessels row in Port Said are readv to begin work and the German salvage fleet, which includes the world’s two most powerful salvage vessels, is expected gonn. the radio said.
Earlier report’* said that 12 British salvage ships and their crews will take part in the clearance of the Suez Canal under the United Nations flag. Lieu-tenant-General Raymond Wheeler, in charge of the salvage operations, said today.
One French salvage vessel will take part. Seven British and French supply ghins have also agreed to co-operate. General Wheeler also announced that ■ channel had been opened in the canal from Port Said to El Cap, about 25 miles away.
