Malaya’s Place In Commonwealth

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 20. The Malayan Federation’s Chief Minister, Prince Abdul Rahman, said today that his country, which will become independent next August, has chosen to remain within the British Commonwealth.

He was addressing the first meeting on Anglo-Malayan negotiations in London on defence and finance questions concerning Malaya.

The Prince told the private meeting that for Malaya, with an active Communist enemy in its midst, there could be no neutrality. Malaya had made her choice.

That choice was with the Commonwealth—and it was irrevocable, he said.

Today's 90-minute meeting was mainly concerned with a proposed mutual defence and assistance treaty expected to come into force when the Federation becomes an independent Commonwealth nation.
