Results of this year’s one-act playwriting competition organised by the New Zealand branch of the British Drama League are as follows: Open section (examiner, Miss Frances McKenzie, director of studies, British Drama League, London) —“The Desperate Lie,” by Mrs A. A. Kenny, Auckland, 1; “Rhyme and Reason,” by Mr T. Journet, Wellington, 2; “Taters,” by Miss I. K. Robinson, Christchurch, 3. “Skin Deep,” by Nyra Bentley, Wainui-o-mata, was highly commended. All-women section (examiner Miss Lyn Oxenford, British Drama League training department, London) — “Something Snapped,” by Miss A. Lawrence, Timaru, 1; “Afterwath,” by Mrs J. E. Lawrences, Blenheim, 2; “Atlantic Crossing,” by Miss C. Styles, Auckland, 3. Religious section (examiner, Sir James Shelley, London)—“With Keats at Ephesus.” by Dr. S. L. Elgar, Lower Hutt, 1; “The Prince of Potters,” by Miss L. Crisp, Karon, Wellington, 2; “The Mission Bell,” by Mrs D. Chailies, Naenae, 3. Junior section (examiner, Miss O. E. Harding, Wellington)—“Sugar and Spice,” by Miss C. Styles, Auckland,!. The winner in the all-women section qualifies for the “Mirror” award, and in the religious section for the H. Reed and Marian Reed Trust Award.
