TENDERS FOR PLANT NEXT AUGUST

An estimate that £250,000 will be required by January, 1958, to meet the cost of major mechanical equipment for the new treatment works has been given to the Christchurch Drainage Board by the consulting engineer. The proposal is to call tenders for the equipment next August. The finance committee reported to the board last evening that it would be necessary to apply for sanction of the treatment works loan of £900,000 early in the new year.

In the last month £18,330 was received in loan subscriptions. The rate of subscription had been arrested to a certain extent by the opening of the £200.000 underwritten issue on December -3. The committee had instructed that an estimate of monthly loan expenditure in the next year b? prepared so that it would be in a better position to decide when and to what extent further loan issues should be placed on the market. The acceptance of th* ‘ender for sewer reticulation in the Wairakei road area of B. Moore and Sons, Ltd., for £41.605 was reported by the construction committee. Another tender accepted was for £7292 by A. Edmond and Son for a rising main at South New Brightoh.

The board accepted the tender for £28.126 of E. M. Hobson, Ltd., for sewer reticulation of the Hillsborough area.

The committee will consider next month the calling of tenders for 179 chains of reticulation sewers in the Marshland road area and the sewer in Marine parade and Bowhill road. New Brighton.

The board decided to accede to the request of the Ministry of Works to dispose of effluent from the Pyne, Gould. Guinness housing block at Riccarton to the main at the corner of Blenheim and Wharenui roads, all the work and the maintenance and running of the pumping station to be a cost to the Ministry. The area to be serviced will be brought into the sewer rating area. The works committee reported that provision will be considered on next year’s estimates of £ll.OOO for the renewal of the sewer in Burnside Memorial Highway.
