FUEL SUPPLY FOR NEW UNIVERSITY

Sir.—There seems to have been bungling in the plans for the new university building at Ham. Clearly the ideas of the Ministry of Works on heating belong to a past age. The inflexibility of a coal-fired system, the smoke nuisance, the problem of the disposal of ash, should be sufficient to eliminate this system from consideration. The present Canterbury College buildings are heated by a coal-fired steam system. The Ministry of Works installed the plant about two years ago. When it operates in the winter months it causes much dirt in the neighbourhood and the inflexibility of the system is demonstrated by the fact that it is impossible to get heat at short notice, and several times a year the system fails and the buildings are left without heat—in some cases for weeks at a time. May we have other than coal-fired heating at Ham?— Yours, etc., THE FROG. December 17, 1956.
