ENCROACHMENTS ON HAGLEY PARK

Sir, —The differing opinions expressed by the council of the Canterbury Automobile Association indicate inconsistency in determining aesthetic values. To oppose the siting of an advertising hoarding in the countryside is the antithesis of roading through city parklands, and I happily join the public cry of “Hands off Hagley Park.” Fifty-five years ago I played among the trees and native tussock in Hagley Park, and in the passing years watched the persistent encroachment by buildings, clothes lines, motor-cars' and now the possibility of another roadway. Finally, I must ask the Christchurch City Council to honour their trust, and remind the Canterbury Automobile Association that the area of land known as Hagley Park was not-given to the citizens of Christchurch for the purpose of a modern motor highway.— Yours, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE. December 17. 1956.
