HYDATIDS

Sir.—lt is heartening to read of a club being formed to eliminate hydatids in the Cheviot County. These people and those in the counties to the north are to be greatly commended. Is this enough? Many have thought that the dosing of dogs is not of great importance. They have reasoned that “if it were, then there would be a law about it.” They can hardly be blamed, for they are partly right. There should be a law about it. Is the Department of Agriculture prepared to advocate doing away with compulsory dipping and, instead, forming voluntary clubs to dip the sheep of the country? This is a matter of life and death. It is a matter of suffering, sorrow, and pain. (I personally know a young mother who has had over 30 ©Derations after hydatid infection.) The spread of hydatids must be stopped. Immediate action is called for. When will the Government take action?—Yours, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. December 17, 1956.
