HOSPITAL BOARDS

Mr Brownlee Loses Seat PROFESSOR DANES A NEW MEMBER The North Canterbury Hospital Board gained a physiotherapist (Miss M. E. McLean) and an economist (Professor A. J. Danks) and lost a plastic surgeon (Mr J. J. Brownlee). A vacancy on the board was caused by the retirement of Mr V. C. Lawn. A retired postmaster, Mr Lawn had been chairman of the board for nine years. Citizens and Labour both won five seats, the same as in the previous election. Mr Brownlee, previously a Citizens’ representative, stood this time as an Independent, and his votes fell considerably. In 1952 he won 21.122 votes and third place in the poll. This time he heads the list of unsuccessful candidates with 15.390 votes —596 behind the last elected member, Mrs A. Mathison—and there is very little chance of there being an upset. Dr. L. C. L. Averill and Miss M. B. Howard, M.P., again led the poll. Miss McLean had previously had a term of six years on the Hospital Board, but this was Professor Danks’s first venture into local body politics. Mr Lawn, who was chairman of the board for nine years, did not seek reelection. Of the 10 new city members, six are women and four men. The voting resulted:—
